Meet Eric Ortiz of Eric Ortiz Art…
I received my B.F.A in Graphic Design at Cleveland State University and I try to capture a mood or feeling that has inspired me. I use the computer to create concepts for my compositions. This is the first time I am participating in this show, but have shown artwork at other events and galleries. I have had my art featured in the Doubting Thomas Gallery in Tremont as well as the Zaller Gallery on Waterloo Rd. I also had the privilege to design and paint two guitars for the “2012 Guitar Mania” Sponsored by the United Way. I have painted this series of paintings for about three years.
I am influenced by many things like color, composition, and design and use my Graphic Design styles and ideas in my artwork. I study the subject matter and create sketches and color selections. I then create shapes with colors to create the final image. At an early age, I was very creative. I would draw and color not only for myself but also for anyone else who enjoyed the work. I like showing my artwork to large crowds. In galleries, there is a limited audience, but I feel that more people can see the work if it is at a craft/art show. I want to show vibrant color and design through my paintings. I want to create a visual excitement for people to enjoy.
Meet Beth Brenckle from Vintage Child by Ant B…
I have been married for 39 years to my high school sweetheart and have three wonderful children. All three are great people with wonderful careers. My oldest son and his wife are expecting their first child -my first grandchild and I couldn’t be more excited! I had a good and varied career with the Postal Service starting as a carrier, then a clerk and a Postmaster in three different towns. Retiring in 2016 has given me what I have always longed for – time to pursue my hobbies and finally to be a full- time housewife.
I have been crafting my whole life if you can count all the outfits, I made for my designer paper dolls! Paper mâché’, pottery, embroidery, counted cross stitch, painting, I have done it all and then some, but my favorite has always been sewing. My mom had an old Singer that I sewed on during the middle school and high school years. My family had five kids, so if I wanted new outfits, I sewed! 4-H gave me the chance to showcase my efforts and I belonged for years.
My grandmother was also a huge influence, she didn’t just sew, she could tailor! Vogue was her pattern choice and I realized you could do so much more than make a pair of shorts. My Nonnie taught me to do it right, or don’t do it and that the iron was my best friend when sewing. These days what inspires me most is the vintage needlework I find in antique stores, estates, etc. I design my children’s clothes around a found piece or a set of buttons or applique I have found. These pieces need to be showcased for the masterpieces they are. I didn’t really discover my talent as I worked on it and perfected it. Sewing has been a part of my life since age 10 when I picked up my first needle.
Five years from now, I hope I will still find the process of searching for a needlecraft piece and creating a perfect little outfit for a special child still as satisfying as I do now. Making and creating an item is good for the soul!
I don’t really have a message to convey, but an appreciation. Back in the day when women did needlework on an everyday basis thousands of masterpieces were created. Sadly, those items are usually now stuffed in a dresser drawer or even thrown away. These pieces should be brought out and admired. Meet Lisa Madden...
I graduated with a BA from Notre Dame College, and currently am retired after 20 years with NASA, both in OH and MD. I have two grown children, one in Mayfield Heights, and the other in Westport, MA. I live in North Ridgeville and have an in-home studio with kiln in the garage. I’ve been making pottery works of art for over thirty years. Notre Dame even created a higher level class with just me in it for my Senior Year there. I believe I’ve done three or four Avant-Garde shows. I’ve been living mostly in Maryland since 2012, with brief stays back in Ohio. Now, I am back for good.
Nature, for one thing, inspires me to create. I use live plants as “molds” for some of my work. Since most of my work is “dysfunctional,” I also like to paint on my work and create pieces of art with vivid colors. I use found objects in my clay works as well to add another level of interest in a piece. It took a while to break out of the linear world and let my imagination run wild. My college teachers helped. I use both sides of the brain, hence the ability to be a computer software engineer at NASA, and also an artist. I started with the already make bisque ware, taking evening classes with a friend. Then in college got to actually play in clay, and that was it, I was hooked.
I keep lots of pictures, both that I’ve taken, and then some out of catalogs and books, to inspire me. I draw a lot of templates freehand and go to workshops when time permits. Painting on canvas evolved into painting on clay. It is definitely a process and is ever evolving. I still consider this a hobby, but in five years I would like to see more of my work in local galleries and especially in people’s homes! My message is to have fun in whatever you do. If it is not fun, it is not worth doing.
Meet Andrew & Cassy Quillin of Home Slice Pies…
Hi there! We are Andrew & Cassy Quillin. We live in a cabin in the woods and bake pies! We specialize in four-inch mini pies that are baked fresh daily. We also bake up full-size pies for the holidays and special orders. We focus on seasonal flavors and use local and organic ingredients to the highest degree possible. From our all-butter crusts to our fresh fillings, every piece of the pie is made from scratch, with love. Launching in October 2018, Home Slice Pies is a roaming pie shop, which means you can find us at local farmers’ markets, craft shows, breweries, and other Cleveland area events. We love to cater weddings and parties too! We are brand new to Avant-Garde, but we are excited to be participating in 3 shows this year!
What inspires us? We love pie! In fact, we believe pie has special powers - it can heal, comfort, say thank you, apologize, and congratulate. It is such a cozy and nostalgic treat! We also believe that pie is meant to be shared. And that's what really inspires us: sharing our pies with our community! We have a large collection of pie cookbooks that we read for inspiration. We also love to brainstorm ideas for new pies based on the seasons and holidays. We have a lot of fun coming up with seasonal flavors and spending a weekend testing them out.
We wanted to find something that we could do together and really enjoy. Since cooking and baking has always been our number one shared passion/hobby, we knew that was the direction we wanted to go in. The idea for Home Slice Pies came up in one of our brainstorming sessions and we just fell in love with the idea and ran with it. We cook together every night and we love to bake up new treats on the weekends. After Cassy was in a bad car accident two years ago, we got really into pie making - it's very therapeutic and healing! It really became a passion for both of us and the feedback we got from friends, coworkers, and family who sampled our pies made us realize that we could be onto something! In five years, we would love to have a food truck. A larger commercial kitchen space and savory pies are also on the wish list! Overall, our message is that pie is a simple (and delicious!) pleasure in today's chaotic and complicated world - share it with those you love!
