See You This Weekend, Strongsville!

Meet Angelina Moneir from A Song For A Melody...
Hello! I’m Angelina. Glassblowing, ceramics, watercolor, acrylic, printmaking, stickers, you-name-it kind of artist, designer, hiker, backpacker, and outdoor environmental educator. What inspires me most is the natural world around us and it’s vast intensity. In my spare time I hike and walk any and everywhere I can, stay active, watch movies, spend time with the ones I love, and photograph the beauty and inspiration that surrounds me. My life is about bringing awareness to the little things and how it brings joy and happiness to us, sometimes unnoticed!
I started my Etsy shop after spending several years away from really delving into my art making after graduating art school - studying fine art, and spending a session out in Chilhuly’s Pilchuck School of glass. I have been creating art since I was very young which I would say is when I found my passion for art and continue to do so, this is my first year actually delving into the realms of Art & Craft Vendor shows after being so nervous to for years. This Strongsville show will actually be my first Avant-Garde show, but have a few in store later on this year and hopefully next.
I would say that my creative process has a lot to do with my background in the outdoors, teaching outdoor education and having a passion for the natural world and connection with others. I backpack/hike quite often and find that I am inspired while on the journey in the woods to create works of art that replicate and show as much beauty as I can create - through my work. I try to encourage others to head outside, connect with nature and what it has to offer - through my teaching and through my art.
When others look at my art, I want them to feel a sense of connection to the earth, a connection that seems to be lost with the hustle and bustle, back and forth, that we go through every single day. Maybe a reminder to help us slow down - take a break and be aware of your surroundings. Head outside, in the woods - or even in your backyard, sit in the grass or in the trees and discover the world that is around us even when we are unaware.

Meet Dean Pol from Cork art by Deano...
Born and raised most of my life in the Akron area, Fine Arts graduate of the U of Akron. I currently commute from Westlake and work in downtown Cleveland. By trade I'm an HR professional for many years in multiple industries. In my spare time I have built 2 homes and crafted on many home renovation/remodeling type projects. One of my life passions has been working as an artist creating with a variety of mediums. I love creating art that celebrates aspects of our lives.
I have spent 40 years as an amateur artist working with acrylic paint, wood and 3-D sculpture materials. For the last 6 years I focused my energy on recycling products and using corks of many kinds as the primary design element. I have participated in many other art shows, however this is my first Avant-Garde show.
The vision to see creative usefulness of things that are cast aside with past memories to create appreciation of new lasting art, and I have always used art and crafts as an outlet to create things others appreciated. I could draw and copy things as a young child, then I discovered taking apart things an being creative to design and re-create. I would describe by creative process by looking past what is front of my eyes and seeing the potential of using it as part of something creative and new.
I'm hoping people keep drinking wine and champagne to celebrate so corks are in ample supply, lol. As long as people continue to appreciate the time, patience, creativity and what a hot glue gun and corks can artistically provide there will be a market and possibility for growth. The message behind my work is to see the creative design potential in all things and let corks help you celebrate.

Meet Marsha Ribovich from Rethunk Junk...
Hi! My name is Marsha Ribovich. I was born and raised in Northeast Ohio. I have a
master’s degree in business management from Cleveland State and work full time as a
project analyst during the day. In my free time I experiment with many different art
forms. Rethunk Junk has been in existence for just over 2 years (October 2016). But I have
been creating art nearly my entire life.
We have participated in roughly a dozen Avant-Garde Art & Craft Shows over the past
few years. Predominately in Chagrin Falls, Strongsville, Rocky River, and Fairlawn. We want to do our part to help the environment. Trash and overlooked or outdated items become inspiration for us to repurpose. Friends and complete strangers inspire us too with random thoughts and ideas that we spin into our creations. We love our city/state, music, sports, and inspirational phrases. We are always open to incorporating different types of art into our message. All these passions have inspired most of our designs.
I thought there must be a way to turn trash and unrecycled items into art. That night I received what I believed to be a sign. I was sitting in my living room thinking about the day and I heard a loud bang. A pop can had exploded. I looked at the pop can that appeared to be smiling at me and immediately knew what I would do first. I created wall-art with pop can pieces. I used the bottom of the can and the sides for different designs.
Our creative process can be long and drawn out. We like to create new designs to keep
our vision fresh and also update our classic designs simultaneously. Within the next five years, we see ourselves possibly opening up our own store to provide a larger variety of recycled/repurposed art and include other local artists in our journey. Overall our message behind our work is to take something battered and make it beautiful to proudly display for all to see.

Meet Carol Lucas from Lucas Designs Handmade Pottery and Jewelry...
Quick! Name three fun adventures you want to have in retirement. -Chances are, when the time comes, you could be doing something you never dreamed of, something you enjoy immensely. That happened to me early in my retirement when I walked into a Parma pottery studio that I’d driven past daily for years, and asked, “What’s this all about?”
Ten years later, I’m up to my basement ceiling in pots, plaques, and platters as my fingers prod daily into cool mounds of damp dirt, and shake the life out of gurgling bottles of glaze. I hope to keep this nonsense up for some time to come, as inspiration stirs my soul and guides my crafting philosophy: Follow creativity wherever it takes you.
Meanwhile, I will sell my wares at area craft fairs such as Avant-Garde, which I view as one of the better-quality venues in the Northern Ohio area. Thank you for choosing Lucas Designs Handmade Pottery and Jewelry and remember, “retirement” is just another word for “play!” As the great American Poet Ogden Nash once said: “You are only young once. But you can stay immature indefinitely!”

Meet Meghan Barker and Carrie Kneale from Just that Simple...
We started out as strangers, then became neighbors, and now we’re best friends and business partners. We are mothers, wives, and creative, strong women. We just started our business together but we have both had interests in this field for years. It wasn’t until we became friends that we realized we had the same dream.
Our love for originality and making something completely our own inspires us. We work with old pallets so we love creating something beautiful out of something discarded, warped, and damaged. As two women, struggling with diagnosed anxiety, it’s not always easy to get up and get moving. There are therapeutic benefits to getting out, getting our minds moving, listening to music and getting our hands dirty. By the time we’ve finished a piece, the excitement and feeling of fulfillment outweighs any anxiety.
We enjoy making things from scratch. From start to finish, all of our products are completely original and unique. Because of the wood we use and the way we craft it, not one single piece is exactly like any other. We don’t have any creative process. It’s all about how we are feeling that day, or images we’ve seen, or ideas we’ve created out of thin air. We just get out and go for it and make sure we have fun doing it.
In five years we will have our own shop and office. We will be successful and very pleased with our products and how our business has grown. The message behind our work is you are loved, you are beautiful, you are strong, you are powerful, you are creative, you are talented. IT’S JUST THAT SIMPLE!

The Time Is Nearly Here, Strongsville!

Meet Abby Paul from Aesthete Ceramics...
My name is Abby Paul. I graduated from the Cleveland Institute of Art in 2016 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Ceramics. For the past 3 years, I’ve worked with special needs kids full-time and made pottery during my spare time. However, I’ve recently switched over to making pottery full-time and it’s been nothing short of a dream come true. I also teach art to homeschooled kids a few times a week, which is loads of fun too.
I have been making pottery for about 5 years total. I’ve only started selling my pottery online and at craft shows for about a year now.  This will be my first Avant-Garde Art & Craft Show that I will be participating in! I’m excited!   Many things inspire me to create, but one of my greatest inspirations would have to be my dad, who passed away 2 years ago. It was shortly after he passed away when I decided to start up my pottery business, Aesthete Ceramics. More specifically, my individual pieces are greatly inspired by nature.
Pottery started out as a hobby for me about 2 years ago, but has recently turned into a full-time gig!  I was introduced to ceramics when I was in high school. I took a ceramics class and instantly fell in love. Since tenth grade of high school, I knew I wanted to work with clay as a career.  I love to create! It all starts with an idea in my head that is usually sparked from something I see or find outside. I create most of my forms on the pottery wheel, then hand paint all the designs. From there it turns into a physical object that I can actually hold in my hands!
I would love to have a well established home studio where I'm able to create as much as I want, whenever I want. I would also love to offer small group pottery classes to people of all ages, but more specifically special needs kids.  An aesthete (noun, pronounced "es-theet") is a person who has or professes to have refined sensitivity toward the beauties of art or nature.  Aesthete Ceramics originates from the combination of an aesthete and myself, Abby Elizabeth. I, Abby Elizabeth, combine aspects of art and nature to create both functional an decorative ceramics that are pleasing to look at and pleasing to use.

Meet Cindy Casper from So Darn Pretty Designs...
I am a self-taught Jewelry Artist who loves glitter and sparkle...  I have been designing jewelry for many years. What started as a hobby has turned into a full time passion.  Giving new life to vintage components and introducing them with new baubles to create one of a kind eye catching designs.
Using natural gemstones and various techniques such as etching and soldering with various other materials that merge into beautiful pieces that are sure to receive many compliments...

Meet Karyn Faranda from Incantations By Karyn...
I am a artist with a fine art degree however I have just recently, I'd say in the past 2 years started my own business doing what I love which is Art, of just about every kind. This came about when I discovered I had 4 chronic illnesses I'm just going to be unable to work the way I had my entire life and I would lose my home and everything and I have. I am a recovering addict with 5 years clean and my art is about Joy, gratitude and Resurrection and I put good energy into all my pieces. I get a lot of my inspiration from watching the simple yet miraculous nature around me metamorphosize through the seasons and transform into something even more beautiful. I feel truly blessed to have the privilege of doing this everyday, it is not a job for me.
The Human Condition, the deep emotional scars that many of us endure, namely myself, and then the pure joy of being Resurrected and given a second chance in life inspires me to inspire others to know that there is something beautiful in every disaster, there is a lesson to be learned in every hardship and there is always a light at the end of the tunnel if you work toward it, even when you feel like giving up. I think my art is a labor of love, in fact I know it is and it is truly to make others feel good about themselves which in the interim brings me great Joy that possibly something I created helped them discover their own Joy.
I am hoping to either have a home-based business like I do currently but with a much bigger client base and hopefully some employees to help me with all the other work that comes with using the Arts as your sole form of income. You cannot create, Market, inventory, get to client homes to create for them, deliver or pick up pieces to be refurbished or repurposed without eventually losing your mind (LOL).
The message that I try to convey is that we all fall and we are all human and we all feel things deeply, some more than others, some of us make very horrible  mistakes that leave us riddled in guilt and therefore the only time we should be looking down upon someone is when we're reaching down to pull them back up. I firmly believe that and that there needs to be a sense of community in order for us to survive this computer aged world we currently reside in and to utilize our God given social skills again and mingle with one another face to face  and not over a cellular or computer device. This is how you learn about life, about people and about what is good for you and what makes you happy oh, that is my opinion of course.

Jumping Into Strongsville This Fall!

Meet Paul Jira from Paul G. Jira Gallery...
My name is Paul Jira and I am a local artist. I was born in Cleveland, Ohio and currently live in the Chippewa Lake area. While attending John Marshall High School, I received a scholarship to The Columbus School of Art & Design.  I also attended Cooper School of Art.  In 1966, the art instructor set up a still life for the class to paint. It was made up of flowers, pots and various items from the classroom. I found this to be boring and asked to set up my own still life. After getting the “OK”, I went down to the boys shop and found two, old lawnmower engines and an old hand press. I then saw a can of roofing tar. We had brown paper towels in the classroom. These items created “The Garage Sale”.
I retired in 2013 after 40 years in the manufacturing business. I started painting again in 2008 for a hobby. The piece I was working on was The Playhouse Square. At this time Sue, my wife, convinced me to start showing my work. Prior to this, no one ever saw my artwork except for family and friends. I started applying to local art shows and joined the Medina County Art League (MCAL). I’ve had several paintings published in AGC 52 weeks, 52 works calendar. I was featured in The Cleveland Magazine and have won numerous awards at local art shows.
I believe an artists’ subject matter should capture personal experiences and interests. I’ve painted The West Side Market, The Allen Theater, local Cleveland churches, etc.  Also, closer to home, I’ve painted several landmarks from The Chippewa Lake Park and the Medina area. I use the Giclee (gee-clay) print making process.  It creates a high quality fine art reproduction and is accepted in galleries, museums and by private collectors.  Each print is signed and numbered and comes with a “Certificate of Authenticity”. I understand that as an investor or simply someone that enjoys art, you would want your artwork to last for many, many years.
This is my first Avant-Garde Arts & Craft show.  I learned about Avant-Garde from my daughter, Jackie. She participated in the show last year for the first time and spoke very highly of the show and Becki. I am looking forward to this experience!

Meet Mary Ellen Pawlak from ARTkissed...
I live Brunswick, but Cleveland will always be where my heart is. I've been blessed with three
amazing kids, two adorable grandsons, three crazy older sisters, and the best bunch of friends
I've been lucky to have in my life for over forty years. I have a custom made necklace that says,
"God, Family, Friends and Art".... and that says it all!
Art has always been a part of me, from a very young age. My father was very artistic and I
remember watching him paint amazing winter scenes, using gift box lids with the sides torn off
as his canvas.  All through school, I got to decorate bulletin boards, design program covers, paint stage sets and do makeup for school plays.  At the suggestion of a friend, I started selling paintings and polymer clay pieces on eBay and eventually I opened an ETSY shop, selling various things like vintage Halloween and holiday themed collages & greeting cards. Three of my collages were published in Somerset Studio magazine.
My current obsession is with paper clay. It's so different from the polymer clay that I've worked
with in the past. I started using a store brand, then found a recipe to make my own.  I love the
whole process from shredding the paper (old bills & junk mail!), to mixing & shaping the clay into
bowls etc.. I really love the organic feel and the joy I get making something completely from
scratch. My 5 year old grandson, Garrett (who really loves doing art at Grandma's), said it best,
"We're turning junk into good stuff!". Yes!
My mood influences the colors and designs I choose for each piece, so there's not so much a theme, but more of an eclectic mix of "personalities".  I fall a little bit in love with each piece I make thinking, "this is the best one!" until the next one is "born".  They're all little pieces of me. Though my interests change over the years, my passion for art and creating never will.  This will be my first Avant-Garde show and I'm so excited to participate and happy to get back into doing shows again.

Meet Connie Morilak from The Singing Beader...
My name is Connie and I'm a self-represented handmade jewelry artisan who sells on ArtFire.com and Etsy.com. I also sell my handmade earrings at Joseph's Hair Salon in Strongsville. I was inspired by my husband's cousin who taught me the basics of making a beaded necklace. I loved the craft immediately and started making a lot of jewelry for myself. It was great to make bracelets that fit my small wrist because store bought are always too big for me.
I named my business The Singing Beader and started selling online in 2009. The Singing Beader namerepresents both my love for making jewelry and singing. I love to sing, especially karaoke. I'm  often asked if I sing and make jewelry at the same time. I usually don't because I like to put my heart into each one separately.
After making hundreds of jewelry pieces for myself, I was encouraged by friends to sell my beautiful work online. In 2009 I started creating one of a kind gemstone, crystal and pearl jewelry and then expanded to music themed jewelry around 2012. Many of the music pieces are also one of a kind and some have hard to find musical instrument charms, like oboes, zylophones, triangles, tambourines and bagpipes. I also sell microphone charm jewelry for the singer. My music jewelry is my best seller.
In five years, I hope to get my husband involved in my business, since he will be retired. For now, he's my roadie for hauling my goods to craft shows. This will only be the 2nd Avant-Guard Art & Craft show I've participated in but I've been a shopper for several years!

Attention Strongsville, Who's Ready to Shop??

Meet Edy Seaman from Long Way Home Studios...
Hi there! My name is Edy Seaman and I am a native of Canton, Ohio. I am fortunate enough to call myself the proud parent of four incredible children ranging in age from 16 to 31. My handsome and sweet husband and I have been married for 33 amazing years.
I have been maker of things for as long as I can remember. From scrap paper pompoms in the back of my parents printing shop to the lovely glass and metal jewelry I create now. My hands have to always be making something. My creative journey has led me in many directions but I always seem to end up back at personal adornment. After owning Edybeady’s Bead Shoppe and Terra Potta Pottery Studio for seven years, I have returned to full time work in my studio, Long Way Home Studios. Not only am I producing new and exciting things there but am using it as a place to teach, share and inspire other creative souls.
My work is comprised of ideas, techniques and skills acquired over the past 35 years of creative exploration. My approach to jewelry at this point in my creative life is simple yet beautiful and easy to wear. Jewelry should not be high maintenance. The products shown in the photos are made using the techniques of lamp working  enameling and metal-smithing. I combine different materials and techniques in much of my work.

This is my first Avant-Garde Arts and Crafts show and I am really excited to participate.

Meet Kelci Vance from KCustomz...
My name is Kelci Vance, I am 24 from Parma Heights, workingvn building my own business. I have been crafting for about five years and this will be my third Avant-Garde Art & Craft Show. I love creating my own designs, seeing my finished profits, and sharing my talents to make creative items for others. My mom got me started in my passion for creating. I discovered my actual talent while pursuing my photography degree in college.
I love to craft and get some “me” time (just had a baby in October). I play some music to get creative juices flowing and try to see what people are looking for or what item is popular (decals, mugs, wine glasses). I would love to have my small business up and running with a small store front in 5 yearsI don’t have a message behind my work, I just strive to create the best items for customers in a timely fashion, with quality results.

Meet Cecky Ropelewski...
I have been drawing and painting since I could hold a pencil in my hand.  I became a professional artist in 1979 when I quit my job as an architectural draftsman. Native American spirituality influences my work with the belief that the animals each have a power to share with the humans.
Starting with handmade paper, a picture shows itself and I paint what I see in the paper. I add beading, feathers, fur and stones in the picture for a natural element.  I then wrap the frames in leather.   This all, hopefully, speaks to customers who see my work.  I like it when I hear “I need that picture.”  That tells me that the piece spoke to my customer and it will help guide their life. This is my first Avant-Garde Art & Craft Show.  Hopefully, it will be the first of many. In 5 years, I hope to still be painting and selling my work to those who love the Native American flair.

Meet Robin Howard from Starry Moon Studio...
I'm from Cleveland Ohio, and have been making art in one form or another for as long as I can remember. I attended Tri-C a few years ago and completed their program in Art Therapy, and found that expressing myself through art is not only healing, but one can often say things through a piece of art that is difficult to express verbally. Recently I discovered a different technique of working with acrylics, and transitioned it into creating jewelry. I got a really great reaction from friends and family, so I decided to come back to Avant-Garde shows! I did a show in the past, but it has been a couple of years, so I'm excited to be back!
